The Red Velvet Cake

What is a red velvet cake? It does sound so sophisticated. But really it's just an ordinary cake layered with cream cheese frosting. And when I say cream cheese frosting and if you know what it is made of, it's a combination of cream cheese, icing sugar and butter. It's the same frosting that I use for my carrot cake. The red colouring of the red velvet could come from either beetroot or red food colouring. 

So there is really nothing complicated about this cake. But the name sounds so nostalgic and the colour so seductive. Its bright red colour contrasting the white frosting could be very dramatic.
